National Honor Society

In 1921, the NASSP officially established the National Honor Society service organization. Each high school is host to its own chapter of this organization. All NHS members across the nation must be selected on the basis of the same required four criteria, which are: scholarship, leadership, service, and character. At Lutheran North, those sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have a 3.2 GPA, or above, are eligible to be considered by the faculty selection committee that evaluates them on the three remaining criteria of NHS membership, which are regarded in equal value. If selected, students are notified by letter and must attend the installation to become members. This takes place second semester. Thereafter, they are required to maintain a 3.2 cumulative G.P.A., show cooperative school behavior, and are expected to take an active part in the activities of the organization in order to retain their membership and keep it in good standing. NHS membership is considered a great honor and a mark of prestige locally and nationally, but it is a service honorary organization with expectations attached and not just a one-time honor.

At Lutheran North, the Crusader Chapter of NHS with its 36 seniors and 30 juniors provides such services as reading the daily announcements, acolyting for daily chapel services, helping with the Academic Fair, tutoring, serving as ushers for special activities, and running two blood drives per year. Any second-semester sophomore, junior, or senior student with a 3.2 GPA is eligible to be considered by the faculty committee for membership. National Honor Society is an honorary service organization and an enjoyable stewardship experience available for selected students at LHN. Mrs. Elizabeth Thomas is the advisor for NHS.

Student Council

Student Council is responsible for a variety of activities that go on in the school. We are in charge of dances, movie nights and charity events. The homecoming theme this year was Midnight Masquerade and it was a major success. Although the dance ended at 10:30 nearly 300 students danced like there was no time limit.

This year the members of the StuCo Executive Board are as follows:

  • President - Katie Hussey
  • Vice-President - Sharie Moen
  • Secretary - Sara Jolly
  • Treasurer - Troya Valdespino

The movie nights we sponsor occur once a quarter. The student council votes on a movie and anyone from the school and their guests are invited. Snacks are provided and entry to the movie is free.

The most popular charity event that occurred last year was the Polar Bear Plunge. Three of our teachers volunteered to jump in a lake dressed as the three bears n the middle of February. We won second place. Polar Bear Plunge is an organization that raises money for the Special Olympics.

Last Spring we held a Powder Puff Football tournament. This involves girls playing football and boys doing the cheerleading. Powder Puff was a major success and aroused a ton of class spirit in the school.

Fellowship of Christian Athletes

Fellowship of Christian AthletesMission Statement:
Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a Christ-centered organization who’s mission is to present to athletes and coaches, and all whom they influence, the challenge and adventure of receiving Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, serving Him in their relationships and in the fellowship of the church.

FCA is a student led organization at Lutheran North that is open to any student, especially athletes. FCA reaches out to others through athletics and other activities. They meet every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. in the counseling center. At each meeting one of the students leads the group in devotions, fellowship, and prayer. As a group they also look to do service projects throughout the school year to benefit the community. Fellowship groupThis year they hosted "See You At The Pole,” which is a national event where students meet at the flagpole of their school for prayer. They also are planning other service events, school activities, and Bible studies for any student or faculty member to participate in.

The purpose of this group is to give each of the students another opportunity outside of the classroom to hear the Word of God every week, especially through athletics. The group also provides an outlet for students of Lutheran North to build each other up in their faith and to have fun at the same time.

Future Business Leaders of America

Future Business Leaders of AmericaFBLA is a co-curricular club that helps promote leadership and academic achievement. In order to be a member of FBLA, students must have taken, or must be enrolled in, a business course. This includes: Computer Applications I or II, Multimedia Presentations, Introduction to Business, Business Management / Entrepreneurship, Accounting I or II, Marketing, Office Procedures, Economics and Business Law.

FBLA's activities include district and state competitions. Events from all areas of business are offered. The group also participates in a variety of other business-related activities throughout the year, including charity fundraisers. Mr. Tim Brackman is the advisor.

Peer Ministry

Peer Ministries GroupPeer Ministers are sophomores, juniors, and seniors who are nominated and approved by faculty members at Lutheran North (although students may express an interest in serving in this role to the counselors). Peer Ministers have many responsibilities at Lutheran North. Peer Ministers are mentors, role models, and leaders in the school.  They mentor and welcome freshman and transfer students through the freshman orientation, the freshman mixer, and, informally, in daily activities. Peer Ministers are also the leaders of the Small Group Chapels held each week. Peer Ministers are responsible for preparing weekly Bible studies and leading discussions and prayers in a group of 15 students. Peer Ministers are held to the highest of standards academically, behaviorally, and personally, and they are afforded the opportunity to shine as leaders at Lutheran North. Peer Ministers are required to attend a one-day training in early August. Mrs. Burreson and Pastror Deen advise the Peer Ministry Program.

TREND

TREND (Turning resources and Energy in New Directions) is a national student-led organization created by youth who wanted to take a leadership role in advocating an alcohol-free and other drug-free lifestyle. Our TREND Chapter works closely with the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse-St. Louis Area for training and projects.

The Lutheran North chapter of TREND conducts numerous activities throughout the year, including Red Ribbon Week in the fall (drug/alcohol awareness/prevention) and Yellow Ribbon week in the spring (suicide awareness). TREND also sends several students to the summer Regional Teen Institute for Prevention Leaders - a four day camp for students interested in learning about prevention and in leading such efforts at Lutheran North. All LHSN students who want to have fun without alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs are invited to join the chapter. Mrs. Burreson is the advisor. Pictured are the TREND officers.

HiSTEP

HiSTEPers are students trained in the High School Taught Education Program through the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. This is a two-day training where students learn to make presentations to elementary students about such topics as drugs, alcohol, bullying, decision-making, friendships, etc. Lutheran North HiSTEPers make presentations to our Lutheran feeder schools and assist in DARE presentations. HiSTEPers are chosen by the counselors with feedback from faculty. Students may express an interest in serving in this role. The Counseling Department oversees the HiSTEP program.

Chess ClubThe LHSN Chess Club is made up of a group of students with a love of one of the most fulfilling games that man has ever invented. The Club gathers on a weekly basis to play, to discuss strategy and tactics, and to prepare for future tournaments and social events.
