Our Drama Program
The drama program is open to all students as an extra-curricular activity. Every student who auditions is invited to be involved either as an actor or technical crew. They learn to work as a team through rehearsals, set and props construction, and sewing costumes. The program is led by Robin Weatherall, a professional director and sound designer with over 40 years experience in theatre.
There are two productions each year, the Fall Play and Spring Musical. Students also participate in Metro Youth Shakespeare, a program of the Shakespeare Festival of St Louis.
The 2009-2010 school year saw the classic Shakespeare drama MacBeth take the stage. Set in World War II England, the students of LHSN put on a wonderful production. Students are becoming greatly familiar with the language of Shakespeare as in recent years performances have included A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Twelfth Night, as well as Romeo and Juliet. The 2010 musical will be the classic Fiddler on the Roof. Stay tuned for more information regarding the 2010-2011 fall production
In the spring, students presented Fiddler on the Roof. This tale shows Tevye, the father of five daughters, and his attempts to maintain his family and religious traditions while outside influences encroach upon their lives. He must cope with both the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters—each one's choice of husband moves further away from the customs of her faith—and with the edict of the Tzar that evicts the Jews from their village. (Pictures are from Fiddle on the Roof.)
Information about the 2010-2011 drama productions will be available in the fall. Students are encouraged to take part in drama. Many opportunities exist for student involvement, from acting, singing,to building the set, lighting, and sound for each show.
